Steelefish Grille in Bel Air closes: What we know

A Bel Air seafood restaurant that fed the community for more than a decade has shut its doors for good.

What Happened: Steelefish Grille, at 660 Boulton Street in Bel Air, closed Monday. The restaurant first posted that it would be closed, then followed up hours later with a permanent closure announcement.

“It is with a heavy heart that we need to announce the immediate closure of SteeleFish Grille,” the social media post said. “We would like to thank this wonderful community for all of your support over these past 14 years. It has been our pleasure to serve you.”

Background: Steelefish Grille opened in 2014, when the Steele family took over the Boulton Street location after Freddie’s closed there in April 2013. The Steele family had also been part owners of Freddie’s. The seafood-focused restaurant operated at that address for more than a decade.

What’s New: The closure is immediate and permanent. No reopening is planned.

A Tough Economy for Restaurants: While no reason for the closure has yet been given, Steelefish Grille joins a growing list of independent restaurants that have struggled to stay open as costs climb and diners pull back. The independent restaurant sector shrank by 2.3% in 2025, squeezed by high interest rates, elevated food and labor costs, and shifting tariff and immigration policies alongside weakening consumer spending. Independent owners tend to feel the pressure most, since chains can lean on brand strength and centralized support to absorb it.
