A 34-year-old Havre de Grace man was sentenced after pleading guilty in a Harford County case involving severe injuries to his infant daughter.

Alex Lawson pleaded guilty on Feb. 27 to first-degree child abuse causing severe physical injury and second-degree child abuse. He was sentenced to 40 years, with all but 22 years suspended, to be served in the Maryland Division of Corrections, followed by five years of supervised probation.

What’s Happening: Harford County sheriff’s deputies responded on June 24, 2025, to a call involving a 12-week-old baby girl in cardiac arrest. The child was taken to Upper Chesapeake Hospital and then flown to Nemours Children’s Hospital, where she remained until July 11, 2025.

What’s Confirmed: Doctors found bilateral subdural hemorrhaging, an occipital fracture, a skull fracture, a hemorrhage in her spine, and retinal hemorrhages. The medical team identified the injuries as non-accidental trauma, and the child suffered seizures while hospitalized, according to the release.

The Investigation: Detective Scurto, assigned to the Harford County Sheriff’s Office Child Advocacy Center. Evidence showed Lawson abused the child on several occasions while alone with her, including shaking her, whipping her with a swaddling blanket, throwing her onto a pillow, picking her up by one leg and flipping her over before tossing her onto a sofa, and pushing and bending her body in half before carrying her.

What’s Still Unknown: Prosecutors said the child has permanent physical injury, but the exact extent of those injuries is not fully known. The child is now 11 months old.
