A school year can hinge on a few lost days, and Harford County has already burned through seven of them to bad weather. Now Harford County Public Schools is asking the state for a three-day waiver that could shift the district’s last day of school.

Why It Matters: If the waiver is approved, the last day would move from June 25 to June 18. That change would reset the end-of-year calendar for families and staff across the district.

What’s Happening: The Harford County Board of Education has approved the district’s request for the three-day waiver. The request now goes to the state for a decision.

Between The Lines: Harford County Public Schools said it has already used seven inclement weather days this academic year. The district also has schools closed on June 23 because buildings will be used as polling sites for primary elections.

Catch Up Quick: Katie Ridgway, the chief of staff for Harford County Public Schools, said the district has exceeded the required learning-hour totals: 1,080 hours for elementary students and 1,170 for secondary students.
