Tickets are on sale for “The Ma & Pa Comes to Harford,” a Saturday lecture on the history of the Ma & Pa Railroad, which had a stop in Bel Air.
The event starts at 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, at The Historical Society of Harford County headquarters in Bel Air. Tickets are $15 per person.
What’s Happening: Walter “Walt” Holloway will lead the lecture. The Historical Society of Harford County describes Holloway as a Ma & Pa Railroad expert and says he is the fifth generation of his family to be involved in the railroad. Registration is available at www.harfordhistory.org.
What’s Important: The Ma & Pa Railroad ran between Baltimore, at North Avenue and Howard Street, and Market Street in York, Pennsylvania, passing through Towson, Long Green Valley, and Harford County.
The Backstory: The Historical Society of Harford County says the railroad carried mail, Harford County products, and passengers. The society says an early morning run from Harford County to Baltimore carried so much milk that locals called it “The Milky Way.” The society says trains covered 23 miles in Harford County at an average speed of 15 to 20 miles per hour, and that a trip from Baltimore City to Sharon, north of Forest Hill, took about 1 ¾ hours around the turn of the twentieth century.
How to go: Tickets cost $15. The Town of Bel Air government page pointed readers to a shared post with a link to buy tickets.
