Two people were rescued Friday afternoon after falling through the ice at Mariner Point Park on the Gunpowder River.

What’s Happening: Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company and Harford County Department of Emergency Services special operations responded to an ice water rescue at the park. Two people fell through the ice. By 4:15 p.m., both were out of the water and in the care of EMS.

What’s Important: The rescue response included air, dive, and swift water teams as crews worked to get the two people out safely.

What We Know: Resources operating included Maryland State Police Aviation Command with hoist equipment if needed, dive teams from Baltimore County and Baltimore City, and a swift water rescue team from Kingsville Volunteer Fire Company.

The Process: In ice water rescues, specialized crews work around unstable ice and cold water. After a rescue, EMS checks patients for cold exposure and other medical problems linked to being in icy water.
