The Maryland Department of the Environment has issued a Code Orange Air Quality Alert for Northwest Harford County this Saturday.

What’s Happening: A Code Orange alert means air pollution may reach levels that are unhealthy for sensitive groups. The alert covers Northwest Harford County and Northern Baltimore.

What’s Important: Sensitive groups include children, the elderly, and people with asthma, heart disease, or other lung diseases. Those groups should avoid strenuous outdoor activity while the alert is in effect.

How This Affects Real People: The alert falls on July 4th, when many Harford County residents plan to be outside for cookouts and fireworks. Health officials say sensitive groups should limit outdoor exertion. More information is available at mde.maryland.gov. If you are in one of the sensitive groups you may want to skip the parades and fireworks today in favor of air conditioning.
