If you drive north on Route 24 toward Bel Air, your lane layout changed this morning.
What’s happening: Both northbound lanes on Route 24 moved to the left today onto a newly built bridge span over I-95. A barrier wall now separates northbound and southbound traffic under the new setup. Overnight Wednesday, crews closed lanes and slowed traffic to prepare for the switch. Portable warning signs were already posted along the road ahead of the change.
Why it matters to you: The old Route 24 bridge will now be torn down. That demolition is needed to make room for new I-95 Express Toll Lanes — dedicated, less-congested lanes that charge a fee to use — being built along that stretch of highway. Drivers heading through the area should slow down, stay alert, and expect the lane layout to look different than it did yesterday.
The bigger picture: The bridge work is part of a larger project to extend I-95 Express Toll Lanes north from Route 43 to just past Route 24, a stretch that runs between Baltimore and Harford counties. The goal is to reduce backups along that corridor.
