An 81-year-old Bel Air woman died Friday night after a car struck her as she crossed the street in front of her home.
What happened: Police say 81-year-old Joanne Philipovich was crossing the 100 block of Royal Oak Drive in Bel Air at about 7:50 p.m. Friday when a car hit her. The street has no crosswalks or overhead lighting. Emergency crews treated her at the scene before she was taken to University of Maryland Shock Trauma in Baltimore, where she died.
The driver: The man behind the wheel lives in the same neighborhood. He stayed at the scene and was not charged. Investigators are not releasing his name because he was not cited.
What investigators say: Harford County Sheriff’s Office crash investigators responded and took over the case. Sheriff’s officials say “pedestrian error” was the contributing factor. The investigation is ongoing.
What’s still unknown: The investigation remains active. Final determinations about what caused the crash have not been made.
