Drivers heading south on I-95 near the Route 24 interchange in Harford County will face an overnight lane closure Thursday and a permanent change to how traffic flows through that stretch starting around September 18.
What’s happening: The left lane on southbound I-95 will close Thursday, September 17, from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. Friday to prepare for the new setup. Once the change takes effect, southbound lanes will shift to the right of the construction zone, and a barrier wall will separate moving traffic from workers.
What’s new: Since February 2026, drivers have traveled through that stretch in a split pattern, with a barrier wall dividing the left lane from the right lanes. That arrangement will end when the new configuration takes effect.
What this means for you: The speed limit through the work zone stays at 55 mph, and automated speed cameras remain active. The Maryland Transportation Authority says closure dates and times could change depending on weather.
The path forward: The lane work is part of a larger project to extend express toll lanes on northbound I-95 between Route 43 and north of Route 24. Drivers can sign up for project updates at mdta.maryland.gov.
