Harford County Sheriff Jeffrey Gahler issued a statement Sunday expressing support for a Baltimore County police officer who was shot, along with a civilian hurt in the same incident.
What’s Happening: Gahler released the statement June 7 after an incident in Baltimore County left a law enforcement officer and a civilian injured. The shooting occurred around 8:50 a.m. Sunday when Baltimore County officers from the Pikesville Precinct responded to a report of a suspicious person and indecent exposure along a trail off Milford Mill Road in Pikesville. When officers arrived, a person opened fire on them. Officers returned fire, and one officer was struck during the exchange. The statement did not identify the officer, the civilian, or the subject who fired on officers.
What’s Important: Gahler said the Harford County Sheriff’s Office stands with the Baltimore County Police Department and called attacks on officers “unacceptable and cannot be tolerated.” The injured officer, who had been with the department for about a year and a half, was transported to Shock Trauma at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore and was conscious and being treated as of 2:40 p.m. The person who fired on officers was also taken to Shock Trauma. A bystander was injured during the shooting and taken to an area hospital.
What We Know: The statement confirms two people were injured — one Baltimore County police officer and one civilian. The shooting took place in the 900 block of Milford Mill Road. The Pikesville Precinct, known as Precinct 4, covers a large area of northwestern Baltimore County that includes Pikesville, Owings Mills, and surrounding communities.
