Drivers across Harford County will share the road with school buses again Monday as students return to class. The road design determines whether traffic in the opposite direction must stop for a bus.

When to stop: Drivers traveling in both directions must stop when a school bus flashes its red lights on a two-lane road, a two-lane road with a center turn lane or a multi-lane road without a median.

The divided-road exception: On a divided highway with a dirt, grass or barrier median, drivers behind the bus must stop. Drivers going the other way do not have to stop but should use caution.

What this means for you: School bus cameras often record drivers who fail to stop. A violation can bring a $570 fine and three points on a driver’s license, or a $250 ticket.
