People and pets near Old Federal Hill Road in Jarrettsville may have been exposed to rabies after a groundhog found in the area tested positive Monday.

What we know: The groundhog was found near the 3800 block of Old Federal Hill Road. The Maryland Department of Health confirmed the positive test.

What to do: Anyone who touched a groundhog in the area, or whose pet had contact with one, should call the Harford County Health Department at (410) 877-2300. Merely seeing a groundhog is not cause for alarm.

Protect your pets: Keep pets leashed during walks and watch them closely in backyards. Cats, dogs and ferrets should have current rabies vaccinations from a veterinarian or local vaccination clinic.

Watch for unusual behavior: Do not feed, pet or interact with wildlife. Cover trash cans and do not leave pet food outside. Report stray animals showing excessive affection, aggression, low energy or confusion to Harford County Animal Control at (410) 638-3505.
