A 40-year-old man died after he was shot by a Bel Air police officer during a traffic stop Saturday night onFranklin Street, according to the Bel Air Police Department.
What happened: Police said the officer stopped the man at approximately 8:55 p.m. on August 15. A physical altercation occurred, and the officer shot the man. Paramedics reported the gunshot wound was in the back.
An EMS helicopter was dispatched to Bel Air High School and the man was flown to the University of Maryland R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center, where he later died. Police have not released his identity. The officer was treated at a hospital for physical injuries sustained during the confrontation and later released. No other injuries were reported, and police said there is no ongoing threat to the community.
The investigation: The Independent Investigations Division of the Maryland Office of the Attorney General has assumed primary responsibility for investigating the fatal police-involved shooting, as required by Maryland law.
