Residents and pets near Cooley Mill Road in Havre de Grace and Walters Mill Road in Forest Hill may have been exposed to rabies after a raccoon and fox tested positive.

What we know: The raccoon was found near the 200 block of Cooley Mill Road. The fox was found near the 700 block of Walters Mill Road. State health officials confirmed the test results Tuesday after Harford County submitted the animals for testing.

What this means for you: Anyone who had contact with a raccoon or fox near those areas, or whose pet had contact with one, should call the Harford County Health Department at (410) 877-2300. Merely seeing wildlife is not cause for alarm.

How to protect pets: Keep pets leashed during walks and watch them closely in backyards. Cats, dogs and ferrets should have current rabies vaccinations from a veterinarian or local vaccination clinic.

Around your home: Cover trash cans, keep pet food indoors and do not feed, pet or interact with wildlife.

When to report an animal: Call Harford County Animal Control at (410) 638-3505 if a stray animal acts unusually. Warning signs include excessive affection, aggression, low energy and confusion.
