Two teens were charged with arson after they intentionally set fire to a bus in Edgewood Sunday morning, damaging four other vehicles and causing $20,000 in damage, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.
What happened: Shortly before 8 a.m. May 10, fire crews responded to the rear of 1812 Pulaski Highway, near Trident Automotive in Edgewood. About 20 firefighters from the Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company and Aberdeen Proving Ground Fire & Emergency Services took about 20 minutes to control the fire.
What investigators found: Deputy State Fire Marshals determined the fire started inside the passenger compartment of a small bus parked in the rear lot of a shopping center. Investigators concluded the fire was intentionally set after teens ignited materials inside the vehicle. The fire then spread to four nearby vehicles.
The arrests: Deputies with the Harford County Sheriff’s Office spotted a heavy column of black smoke from the area and later saw one of the juveniles running from the scene. That observation led to the identification and apprehension of those involved, according to the fire marshal’s office. A 14-year-old and a 13-year-old have been referred to the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services on charges related to arson and malicious burning. Charges against a third juvenile remain pending.
No injuries were reported.
