The Maryland Democratic Party is hosting a virtual phone bank this Saturday, May 30 to reach voters in Harford County and across the state who have recently left the Democratic Party before the primary election registration deadline.

What’s Happening: About 2,400 Democrats in Harford County alone have switched their registration from Democrat to unaffiliated. The Day of Action Phone Bank aims to find out why they left and help bring them back to the party so they can vote in the upcoming primary.

Volunteers will call these former Democrats to inform them they must be registered as Democrats to vote in Maryland’s June primary. The event runs in two sessions: 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

What’s Important: Maryland holds closed primaries, meaning voters must be registered with a party to cast a ballot in that party’s primary election. Voters who are registered as unaffiliated cannot vote in the Democratic or Republican primaries.

How This Affects Real People: Voters who recently switched from Democrat to unaffiliated and want to participate in the June Democratic primary must change their registration before the state’s deadline. The phone bank is designed to make sure those voters know that requirement before the deadline passes.

The Path Forward: Each session begins with a Zoom training for volunteers. Participants can sign up at the Maryland Democratic Party’s event page. The event is free and open to volunteers joining from anywhere in the state.
